Matt Phillips Sculpey workshop

Small Sculpture Workshop, Open Project

Small Sculpture Workshop - Open Project

This workshop teaches you how to use Super Sculpey, a professional oil-based modelling clay that can be baked solid in your home oven. It’s a versatile clay, which has the advantage of not needing to be fired or cast.

Less mess and minimal clean up means you can experiment more readily and push your sculpture in new directions. You can also use the clay to create maquette studies for larger sculptures.

We will discuss Super Sculpey’s properties and how to get the best from the clay. You will learn different techniques in your sculpture, including how to make small armatures. Super Sculpey is easily imprintable as well, so if you have something with texture that you’d like you press into the sculpture to create texture, please bring that along.

To bake successfully, Super Sculpey sculptures should be kept small, perhaps no larger than the size of a tennis ball, but this depends on armature and thickness of the clay.

Feel free to bring reference material to the class if you have a project in mind. We can also use mirrors to create self-portraits, or work from imagination.

Materials:
