Valerie studied at the Royal College of Art in London under Ruskin Spear, Carel Weight, Peter Blake and Ken Howard. On graduation, she won the Drawing Prize and has maintained a professional practice of drawing ever since. Valerie has taught drawing and painting across the Further and Higher Education Sector.

Her noted portrait commissions include HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Dr Carey, when Archbishop of Canterbury, with Mrs Carey. Her work in public collections includes her portrait of Sir Sigmund Sternberg (National Portrait Gallery) and Sir Gavyn Arthur as Lord Major of London (Guildhall Art Gallery).
